Robotrak’s Mona IV adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AO-SLO) has been installed at the Cole Eye Institute, part of Cleveland Clinic in the United States.
Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute is a major center for ophthalmic care and research. It ranked among the top 10 ophthalmology programs in the United States in the U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2024–2025 and 2025–2026.
Professor Amani Fawzi, Director of Ocular Imaging Research in Oculomics at the Cole Eye Institute, focuses on retinal diseases and advanced retinal imaging, including diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular disorders.
In 2024, Professor Amani Fawzi and Professor Stephen A. Burns of Indiana University were investigators on one of the three projects selected for the inaugural awards under the NIH Common Fund Venture Program Oculomics Initiative. Their project, Cellular-level Vascular Oculomics (CVO) for Monitoring Systemic Vascular Health, explores cellular-level retinal vascular imaging approaches for monitoring systemic vascular health.

During the installation, the Robotrak team met with Professor Fawzi to discuss advanced retinal imaging technologies, including adaptive optics (AO), and their potential applications in retinal disease research. These technologies offer researchers new ways to investigate retinal microstructures and vascular changes in vivo.
Mona IV is an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope designed for high-resolution, cellular-level imaging of the living human retina. By correcting ocular aberrations in real time, the system enables researchers to visualize fine retinal structures in vivo and supports investigations into retinal microstructure, vasculature, and blood flow.
The installation reflects the growing role of high-resolution retinal imaging in vision science and provides further opportunities to introduce adaptive optics technology into ophthalmic research. Robotrak will continue to engage with the international vision science community and advance the research applications of high-resolution retinal imaging.
